Premier 1’s – Hawks vs Varsity final preview

It will be another huge battle this weekend for the hawks boys as they have one more hurdle to overcome.

The hawks will be confident going into tomorrow’s final after last weeks upset semi final win over Taieri.

The hawks will look to play a no doubt forward orientated game as that is where their strengths are. Big ball carriers George Bower, Soloman Pole and Alan Burling will need to be at their best.

The team is unchanged from last week and although the hawks are not seen as favourites it doesn’t seem to worry them, Varsity on the other hand are coming off the back of a very close win over Southern then a bye and a very close encounter with Kaikorai where the team has not really dominated as much as expected.

The hawks are probably in their top form after probably the best clinical first half all season from the hawks boys. Ultimately down to Logan Allen and Vinny Isherwood classy organising last week.

Aidan Spence will need to have another big game following up from last week barnstorming game as well as mr reliable James Tomkinson who did not miss a tackle last week and was man of the match.

For Varsity their threat and weakness is out wide, they have a great attacking options in fullback Taylor Haugh and Gavin Stark but they are renown for leaking holes in defence.

Up front the have a very mobile and skilful tight five that use the tips and behind ball a lot, the hawks will need to be aware of that and watch for their pack that probably is the fittest in the comp.

If the hawks can tame the slick Varsity backline and get the big ball carriers running hard they will be in with a big chance of taking this final and will need every player in their best form to knock the confidence from this Varsity side.

The boys kick off tomorrow at Forsyth Barr Stadium at 3:15pm make sure to get out there and shout your support for the boys!

Supporters are welcome to come down to the club after the final regardless of the result to celebrate the Hawks and their season.
